SUMMARY:Frontier Fellowship: Wendy Wischer
DESCRIPTION:Born in Wisconsin 1971\, Wendy Wischer currently lives and works in Salt Lake City\, UT. She received an MFA from Florida State University (1995) and a BFA from the University of Wisconsin Madison (1993). With a focus on artwork in a variety of media from sculptural objects\, to installations\, to video\, sound and public works. Much of the artwork is based on blurring the separation between the intrinsic history of working with nature and the cutting edge of New Genre and New Media. The conceptual focus highlights environmental issues; finding ways to translate data into personal understanding and create artwork that moves the viewer in poetic ways. She is the recipient of numerous grants including the Pollock-Krasner Grant\, the South Florida Consortium\, the Florida Individual Artist Fellowship\, and the Utah Division of Arts & Museums Visual Arts Fellowship. Wendy has exhibited extensively nationally\, and her international exhibits include Spain\, the Dominican Republic\, Mexico\, Canada\, Italy\, and Israel. Her work is part of several public collections including the Perez Art Museum\, Art in Public Places Miami and Miami Beach\, the Boca Museum of Art\, the Colorado State Art Collection\, and the Utah Division of Arts & Museums Collection. \n“I am excited to spend time in Green River\, away from the city\, immersed in this unique rural community and learn more about the land and\nthe people there. I hope to be inspired and to inspire in ways I cannot yet imagine from afar.”

SUMMARY:Glen Canyon: A River Guide Remembers
DESCRIPTION:“…Carved walls\, royal arches\, glens\, alcove gulches\, mounds and monuments. From which of these features shall we select a name? We decide to call it Glen Canyon.” -John Wesley Powell\, August 3\, 1869. \nIconic Utah outfitter Ken Sleight began his river-guiding career in Glen Canyon during the mid-1950s\, just as the Glen Canyon Dam blueprints jumped from the drawing board to remote desert terrain. The pulse of the Colorado River through the canyon would soon be halted by a cement wall and Glen Canyon backfilled with water. Ken knew the condition of the canyon was terminal. He used every ray of daylight to memorize every detail of the canyon before inundation: to learn its 125 side canyons\, to observe Native American ruins and mining relics\, and to immerse himself in the lives of seminal guides who preceded him like Dave Rust\, Bert Loper\, and Moki Mac. \nNow 88 years old\, Ken and a team of Glen Canyon curators open the archives to create a museum exhibit: Glen Canyon: A River Guide Remembers. With historic landscape photographs\, First American artifacts\, boats and other gear\, passenger portraits and journals\, guides’ handwritten-packing lists\, and more\, this is an exhibit as simple\, gritty\, and rich as a trip through Glen Canyon with Ken. Within the walls of the John Wesley Powell River History Museum in Green River\, Utah in 2018\, Glen Canyon lives again. \nJoin us May 4\, 2018 to March 30\, 2019.

ACME is dedicated to rethinking the public role of museums and to transform how the UMFA connects with\, engages\, and learns from the community. \nLocated in the UMFA Emma Eccles Jones Education Center\, the ACME Lab is an exhibition space for art experimentation and exploration. Visitors of all ages are encouraged to ask questions\, make connections across disciplines\, and engage with art in new ways. The Lab promotes collaboration between museum and community through active participation—providing an avenue for mutual learning\, discovery\, and understanding. Epicenter’s ACME Lab titled “Our Futures” will be on exhibit from March through August of 2018. The exhibit and programming will blend fact and fiction and highlight the relationship between landscape\, society\, and culture by investigating possible futures for rural Utah. \nTransporting the UMFA into the community\, ACME Sessions are a series of public meetups where participants can imagine and articulate new models of education and community engagement through hands-on activities and dialogue. The “Our Futures” ACME Session will take place in select Salt Lake City and Green River 4th and 7th grade Utah History classes from March – August 2018. SUMMARY:Frontier Fellowship: Jamie Horter
DESCRIPTION:Jamie Horter is a rural advocate\, community artist\, and community coach based in Lyons\, NE (pop.851). She created her first public work when she was commissioned at the age of 10 to paint a mural in the elementary hallway of her hometown school. Then and now\, her works are inclusive and community centered\, often placing rural citizens in the design process as co-creators. Jamie’s work is multidisciplinary in scope and her work is informed by a personal history of eclectic explorations. She has degrees in art and chemistry and experience in working on Capitol Hill\, within grassroots advocacy and non-profit organizations\, and serving as editor of a small town newspaper. She now works in rural communities in South Dakota and Nebraska\, using art to engage citizens in building the future they wish to see. \n“I’m looking forward to meeting the people of Green River and learning about the community through their perspectives. What do Green River youth think about their community? I’m interested to hear the youth perspective on their town and explore local intergenerational connections. I’m excited to engage with local artists\, share in dialogue\, and collaborate on work together. And I’m looking forward to connecting with everyone at Epicenter and getting a firsthand experience of their work in Green River.”

SUMMARY:Light the Night
DESCRIPTION:Light the Night is a community-wide light parade and holiday programming that Epicenter helped start in 2015. The light parade\, which never disappoints\, features locally designed\, decorated\, and driven creations starts at 7 pm and runs from east to west on Main Street. Programming\, typically showcasing local singers and dancers\, is held shortly after in the recreational building at the corner of Pearl and Main streets\, next to the Green River Bible Church. Light (often warm and sweet) refreshments are served during the program. Hundreds are always in attendance and this is not an event to be missed!

His art and practice\nreflect a love of geology\, history\, and ecology. He has collaborated with artists and designers in Sweden\, Iceland\, Nepal\, and Germany. SUMMARY:Frontier Fellowship: Tristan Wheelock
DESCRIPTION:Tristian Wheelock was born in Chicago in the early eighties. His dad was a rock n’ roll dj and his mother owned a vintage clothing store. Wheelock spent his formative years sifting through racks of used Levi’s searching for that infamous big E and listening to the crackly sounds of jazz and blues on 78 rpm records. \nWheelock picked up a camera after college and hit the road to start documenting the world around him. He’s kicked up dust in New Delhi\, chased rally racers through the Himalayas\, Airstreamed his way across America and many other strange adventures. \nCurrently based in Florida\, he spends his free time climbing plastic rocks and slowly dialing in the feng shui of his new home. \n“The most exciting thing for me in regards to my upcoming time in Green River is the chance to\nengage with locals and learn about the community. I love small towns and I love the landscape\nin Utah\, especially around Green River. I’m looking forward to making some good work\, having\nsome enriching conversations\, and taking some long walks in the desert.”

DESCRIPTION:Caitlin Denny’s studies lay within the psychological and occult powers of new media\, notions of evolving and interactive archives and social justice amidst regulated internet and technology platforms. Denny’s current work concentrates on technology as performance\, Western Utopian complications\, and the preservation of such a mysterious medium as “New Media.” \nShe has exhibited internationally and has curated exhibitions in California\, France\, New York and online. She is curator of the online based project JstChillin\, a landmark netart project that garnered serious and critical attention towards internet based art which is now in the archives of Rhizome/The New Museum in New York City. \nHer own work in video and image making has been featured at Sonoma Valley Museum of Art (Sonoma\, CA)\, Little Paper Planes Gallery (San Francisco)\, Reference Gallery (Richmond\, VA)\, Roots and Culture (Chicago\, IL)\, School 33 Art Center (Baltimore\, MD)\, and The Lab (San Francisco\, CA). She’s spoken at the Creator’s Project\, UPLOAD.GIF\, and San Francisco Art Institute. She is recently graduated from UCLA’s Master of Library and Information Science program with a focus on media archives. \n“I’m looking forward to connecting the community of Green River to the layered and enlightening histories that all small American towns have. My work as an archivist isn’t done until I activate the materials with the users who can value them the most.”

SUMMARY:Neskaupstaður Residency
DESCRIPTION:Sykes has been invited to reside in Neskaupstaður (pop. 1400)\, Iceland\, for one month as a designer-in-residence working alongside local residents\, visiting designers\, and regional Austurland partners. She sees this residency as the continuation of a long-term relationship and a continued exchange amongst rural practitioners and residents. \nMany rural communities in the American West and East Iceland have struggled for decades with population decline\, mitigating destination development\, and an uncertain economic future (often dependent on corporations). Though these towns share many challenges\, all are rich in culture\, untapped-potential\, natural resources\, mythology\, history\, and all the reasons we love rural places. Epicenter Principal Maria Sykes is honored to be invited to continue her ongoing research and to better connect Green River and rural towns in Austurland (East Iceland). \nDuring this short residency in Neskaupstaður\, Sykes will share both Epicenter’s and her personal resources\, lessons learned\, best practices\, strategic planning advice\, etc. with the town’s leaders\, youth\, consultants\, and other visiting artists/designers through a series of conversations\, community meetings\, and intimate workshops. Sykes will document East Iceland’s rural communities and initiatives for Epicenter’s internal use. Similar to her first visit to Iceland\, employees and local Epicenter partners will be invited to a presentation of her time in Iceland upon her return. Ultimately\, we hope to host rural Icelanders in Green River in the near future!

SUMMARY:Frontier Fellowship: Erika Lynne Hanson
DESCRIPTION:Erika Lynne Hanson creates weavings\, videos\, and installations that connect diverse materials\, histories\, and places. Running through her work is a concern with the idea of landscape; specifically how landscape exists\, by definition\, as a view or representation—a space or scene that can never be reached physically. Hanson received her MFA from California College of the Arts\, and holds a BFA in Fiber from The Kansas City Art Institute. Her work has been exhibited in various locations including Los Angeles\, Kansas City\, San Francisco\, New York\, and Houston. Hanson is a Charlotte Street Foundation Visual Art fellow and has been artist in residence at Real Time and Space in Oakland CA\, The Icelandic Textile Center in Blonduos\, IS\, and The Wrangell Mountain Center in McCarthy\, AK. In 2012 she co-founded 1522 Saint Louis\, an experimental project space in Kansas City. Hanson is currently Assistant Professor of Fibers/Socially Engaged Practices at Arizona State University.
