Come Home to Green River: Year Two

Epicenter’s Come Home to Green River initiative is a rural community design project designed to complement and enhance the development of new affordable housing in the heart of Green River, Utah. Launched by Epicenter in direct partnership with the City of Green River, this initiative combines downtown revitalization and economic investment efforts with arts and design activities.

Activities will focus on creative programming in the schools, community events, and public installations that activate downtown sites such as the forthcoming Canal Commons affordable housing development and the adjacent in-progress Pearl Baker Park & Outdoor Classroom for both the local community and visitors alike. A team of project Fellows and supporters, selected through a competitive process, have been working with Epicenter on this initiative. Read more about the Fellows here.

“Come Home to Green River” is supported by the National Endowment for the Arts (through a multi-year competitive national Our Town grant), the Utah Office of Tourism, Jamie Horter, and a generous anonymous donation.

Canal Commons & Pearl Baker Park

Canal Commons, an affordable housing development in the heart of Green River by Epicenter, ceremoniously broke ground on Phase I (5 rental units) in mid-2024. Due to delays beyond our control, we expect to actually begin construction over the holiday season, pending winter weather. In early 2025, our staff and collaborators will continue pre-development work on Phase III: 5 affordable owner-occupied housing units.

We’ve enlisted the landscape architecture firm ABLE to design “the commons” green space of Canal Commons, essentially an extension of Pearl Baker Park. They recently made a trip to Green River to visit the site and lead an engaging and well-attended community workshop.

In the Spring, we will plant the final round of native, naturalized, and drought-tolerant plants and trees at Pearl Baker Park, and design and install educational signage and wayfinding throughout the park. We’re exploring additional public art installations such as a mural inside the new park pavilion and a footbridge over the canal.

Canal Commons Phase I is funded in full ($1.8M) by the Olene Walker Housing Loan Fund, Rural Community Assistance Corporation, Federal Home Loan Bank, Zions Bank, the Emery County Community Reinvestment Agency, and the Clark and Christine Ivory Foundation. The project is located on 4-acres donated by the City of Green River. Pearl Baker Park is currently supported by the National Endowment for the Arts, Utah Division of Outdoor Recreation, Emery County Travel Bureau, AARP, and the City of Green River.

Creative Crossroads: Summit, Green River Rocks & the Frontier Fellowship

Summit (Apr 24-27): Our Summits activate collaborations and dialogue between artists/designers practicing broadly in the west. Since 2013, the Summit has convened over 130 artists to collaboratively produce site-specific work and engage in dialogue that pushes contextually embedded practice toward experimental and critical interventions. Every 3-4 years, 50-100 artists come together for peer-run workshops, performances, shared meals, and conversation to share ideas over three days in Green River, Utah. This year, Summit participants will gather around the concept of Migration.

The Summit provides a platform for artists to expand their creative practice, commission additional work, gain professional documentation of their work, and develop connections with communities. The convening offers artists opportunities to take creative risks with their practice and join in dialogue and critique with other practitioners, scholars, and community members. As a result of the Summits, new artist collaboratives have formed, artists have been recruited to execute works at partner organizations, and Summit artists have been invited back to Epicenter as Frontier Fellows. A video of the 2022 Spring Summit can be viewed here.

The 2025 Summit is currently supported by The Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts, Utah Division of Arts & Museums, GS & DD Eccles Foundation, Sorenson Legacy Foundation,  BW Bastian Foundation, and Union Pacific Foundation.

Green River Rocks (April 4-6): Green River Rocks is an annual educational event that connects locals and visitors alike to the natural and cultural history of the surrounding region. Epicenter partners directly with The Bureau of Land Management and local partners to bring together the region’s foremost paleontologists, geologists, archaeologists, and conservationists to share their expertise with the public. The event consists of an evening lecture, a vendor market for local and regional businesses, and 10-15 expert-led field trips to significant local sites, all at no cost to the public. This event, which is free and open to the public, sees over 350 attendees annually, helping to jumpstart Green River’s seasonal economy (the event is held in early spring), encouraging travelers to stay in town longer and engage thoughtfully with our region. See 2024 event recap here and event video here.

The 2025 festival is currently supported by the Bureau of Land Management, Emery County, Utah Office of Tourism, GS & DD Eccles Foundation, Sorenson Legacy Foundation,  BW Bastian Foundation, and Union Pacific Foundation.

Frontier Fellowship (2024-25): Since 2011, Epicenter’s artist residency program has provided creative practitioners the opportunity to work with Epicenter in Green River. The Frontier Fellowship has hosted over artists to date, inviting artists to generate new work in response to Green River’s community, culture, and landscape. Artists have the opportunity to work with our local partners, including business owners, the high school and elementary school, and the local museum, as well as the opportunity to engage with our other existing programs. Epicenter also partners with aligned regional arts organizations to expand available resources and platforms for selected artists. Epicenter has invited five artists for the Frontier Fellowship artist residency for 2024-25; learn more about them here. Unlike previous Fellowships –month-long intensive in-person solo residencies– these Fellows will be in residence from June 2024 – December 2025. Fellows will not only be working in communion with Epicenter and the community, they will be Epicenter’s first Fellowship cohort, meeting regularly online, collaborating in person, and contributing to the 2025 Spring Summit.

The 2024-25 Fellowships are currently supported by The Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts, Utah Division of Arts & Museums, GS & DD Eccles Foundation, Sorenson Legacy Foundation, BW Bastian Foundation, and Union Pacific Foundation.
